The mysterious death of her newborn puts Mercy’s life in the hands of a jury while three ministers — and a group known as Children of God — all fight to save her soul. Indentured servants — white or Native American men and women who often worked alongside black slaves — were forbidden to marry during the seven years they were bonded to service. Illegitimate births were common\, and unwed mothers faced heavy fines and extended servitude. This setting of multi-racial households in colonial New England sheds light on an important chapter in our American past. The story builds to a climax that Kirkus Reviews has called “a nail- biter all the way.” \nAbout Lisa Brownell\nLISA HALL BROWNELL\, a fiction writer and editor\, believes that stories have the power to connect one person to another\, and past to present. A former media director for Mystic Seaport Museum and director of publications for Connecticut College\, Brownell was editor of the award-winning CC: Magazine. A Connecticut native\, she resides in Milford with her husband John. \nShe enjoys combining traditional art media with technology. Her skill for bringing ideas from the digital world into the tactile world and vice versa is something she prides herself on greatly. For Heather\, a paintbrush is just as much of an essential tool as a mouse. Her process for creating her work very often begins with a pencil and ends with a 3D printer. \nThe scope of Heather’s artistic endeavors is ever evolving and includes painting\, character creation\, story telling\, illustration\, animation\, and 3D printing. She is the author and illustrator of The Adventures of Gerry the Grasshopper and The Tale of the Fox & the Cricket as well as the author and illustrator of a series of stories which she compiled into a book called Curious Creatures and Fairy Tales. This series was based on eight mixed media figures she created. Heather turned one of these characters called the Dandy into an animated short which was featured in the New Haven International Film Festival and the 401 Film Fest\, both in 2019.
