You can view the trailer HERE. \n  \nThe road to recovery is one step at a time \nThis visually and artistically unique documentary explores the physical and emotional aspects of a community of Canadian west coast tree planters. Deftly weaving together still photos and film footage\, Rita Leistner\, an award-winning photographer\, photojournalist\, filmmaker and erstwhile tree planter (who has been nominated for a 2022 Canadian Screen Award for Best Cinematography for her work in this film)\, depicts the contradictions in the experiences of the tree planters—the hardship and the healing; the solitude and the joy of belonging—creating an eloquent cinematic metaphor for the human condition. \nThis program is free and open to all ages\, and popcorn will be served. Please note that this film is unrated\, but would likely be considered “PG” due to numerous scenes portraying cigarette smoking. \n

The discussion will take place in the library’s Auditorium on the second floor. \nThe lecture will include a brief presentation followed by a screening of “Lina Mangiacapre: Artista del femminismo”* [Lina Mangiacapre: Artist of Feminism]\, a 40-minute docufilm by Nadia Pizzuti. Pizzuti provides an artistic glimpse into the art\, philosophy\, and lives of Lina Mangiacapre and her fellow avant-garde artists in Naples. The film folds together varied audiovisual material\, including: clips from Mangiacapre’s short and feature films\, manifestos\, interviews\, photography\, painting\, poetry\, and more. \nAbout Hilary Emerson: \nHilary Emerson is an Assistant Teaching Professor and Coordinator of Italian at the University of Rhode Island. Originally from Connecticut\, Hilary completed her B.A. at Wheaton College in Massachusetts and Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her teaching specializations include: Italian language and society\, modern and contemporary literature\, and gender and film studies.
